Drones aiding Kansas State wheat research

Sounds like science fiction, but research funded by the Kansas Wheat Alliance is using near-infrared light measurements to dramatically speed up the process of selecting higher yielding, more heat and drought tolerant wheat lines.

USDA provides greater protection for crop growers

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack recently announced that greater protection is now available from the Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program for crops that traditionally have been ineligible for federal crop insurance. The new options, created by the 2014 Farm Bill, provide greater coverage for losses when natural disasters affect specialty crops such as vegetables, fruits, mushrooms, floriculture, ornamental nursery, aquaculture, turf grass, ginseng, honey, syrup, and energy crops.

In 2010, Ray Carroll County Grain Growers began a major company-wide expansion of its grain handling and storage capacities. It added steel storage at Hardin (2010) and at its joint venture rail terminal at Slater (2010), and concrete storage at Carrollton (2011).

At the same time, the west central Missouribased cooperative, with seven facilities, started searching for a greenfield site in northwest Missouri for a new rail-loading shuttle terminal.
