USDA’s June supply and demand report “normally isn’t a big deal,” says Jerry Gulke, president of the Gulke Group. But this year is different, as the falling carryover and rising export numbers showed. “This is a demand-driven market, and people are finally coming to realize that we’ve talked about for months—that demand is the issue, not how many grain stocks we have in our backyard in the United States.”

Precision agriculture technologies growing in U.S.
Information-based production (precision agriculture) technologies have seen rapid growth in the U.S., according to a May 2 article on Amber Waves, an on-line publication of the Economic Research Service (ERS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The advancing technologies allow farmers to more closely monitor farm-production management decisions and possible cost savings. The four most commonly used precision agriculture technologies are: yield mapping, soil mapping, auto-guidance machinery steering, and variable rate technologies (VRT).

Organic acreage ascending
By the end of this decade, the supply and quality of organic wheat and wheat flour should improve and become more dependable. General Mills, Inc., Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S., and Ardent Mills LLC, Denver, Colorado, U.S., both have set up initiatives centered on increasing organic acreage, and they expect to reach their goals by 2019.
